A Busy Weekend...
It was a busy weekend.
AJ moved up one spot from 11th to 10th of 34 Green fleet competitors in the regatta sailed at the Harraseeket Yacht Club on Thursday and Friday. This is the last week of sailing camp and I actually think he and Peach will miss it. They certainly have both learned a lot and matured as sailors this Summer.
Meg sailed in the Monhegan, her first ever offshore race experience. She sailed with some friends from the club who recruited her on Friday night. C-C-Courage, a J-110, sailed to a 3rd
place finish in PHRF Class B. This year's race, unlike so many in the recent past was characterized by plenty of wind. AJ and I went out to watch the start in Flying Circus and had all we could manage in the 25 knot gusts and shifty NW breeze. Here is photograph C-C-Courage's ignominious start -- a nice round up with the spinnaker about 3/4s of the way up -- about 50 yards from the start line. It was published in full-color 8x10 on the front page of the sports section in the local newspaper -- ouch. Apparently things smoothed out after that and they enjoyed a fast sail covering the 113 miles in about 18 hours, saw whales and porpoise, and enjoyed a bright, nearly full moon.
On Sunday the kids and I went to a Red Sox game courtesy of one of the banks I deal with at work. It was Peach's first ever trip to Fenway. We had fantastic seats -- luxury suite on the third base side of the field. It was an exciting game, packed with offense, including a Grand Slam by Mike Lowell in the bottom of the first. The Sox won 11-9 and picked up a game on the Yankees. More importantly the kids had a grand time. The only downside is that enjoying the game up in one of the luxury suites has now probably spoiled for them the joy of sitting in the right field bleachers and having some drunk slob spill his beer down their back. . . just kidding.
AJ took this photo, nicely framing a couple of iconic Fenway images . . .
